초록

This paper aims to historicize Zitkala-Ša’s writings within the context of Native American education at the turn of the twentieth century, analyzing how she resisted the ideology of civilization embedded in Native education. It further examines how her critical consciousness sets her apart from other contemporary Native intellectuals who embraced more assimilationist perspectives. First, it explores the ways in which Zitkala-Ša, in her autobiographical trilogy, overturns the conventional Bildungroman narrative to expose how Native American Education sought to mold Indigenous students into “model Indians” who conformed to colonial ideals. By turning to “The Soft-Hearted Sioux” and “The Great Spirit,” it also investigates her critique of the Native educated elite as revealed in the alienation and tragic outcomes experienced by those who became estranged from their own communities through the process of civilization.
