Characterisation of a new predatory nematode Prionchulus porosus n. sp. (Nematoda: Mononchidae) and four known mononchs from Korea

Summary – Prionchulus porosus n. sp. isolated from the bark and wood of a dead black pine tree was characterised using morphometrics and molecular DNA barcodes. It is characterised by its medium-sized body 2.14-2.70 mm long, numerous body pores, 115-135 in number, remarkably prominent, concentrated only on dorsal side, cephalic papillae more prominent than labial, buccal cavity 43.5-49.5 μm long, amphidial aperture at the level of, or below, dorsal tooth apex, dorsal tooth apex located at 25.2-31.5% buccal cavity length, pars refringens vaginae with two well-developed semispherical or drop-shaped sclerotisations, vulva at 57.5-60.6% body length, tail 165-191 μm long, plump, ventrally curved tapering to bulky broadly rounded terminus, with 5-8 dorsal pores. Additionally, populations of P. punctatus, Coomansus parvus, C. ulsani and Mylonchulus hawaiiensis were also morphologically characterised and DNA barcodes supplied. The phylogenetic relationships among species were reconstructed using 18S-, 28S- and ITS-rRNA gene sequences. Inferences from the three genes showed well-supported sister relations of Prionchulus porosus n. sp. with other members of the genus. © ABRAHAM OKKI MWAMULA ET AL., 2025.
