토니 모리슨의 『재즈』에 나타난 공간과 서사: 도시와 바이올렛의 우물을 중심으로

초록

This paper examines how the space that exists in the characters’ memories makes them live a new life in the real world, focusing on Toni Morrison’s novel Jazz. Analyzing the connection of the real space of the City and the well in Violet’s memories, I use the notion of ‘space’ to identify the character’s self-recovery. To this end, I adopt Gilles Deleuze’s concept of virtual time and space in Cinema 1: Movement-Image and Cinema 2: Time- Image. Deleuze’s concept of virtual time and space is used here because the space in Toni Morrison’s novels is always connected with time in their characters’ memories. Moreover, the concept of ‘any-space-whatever’ in Cinema 2 corresponds to Morrison’s idea of reaching the truth, exploring both the real world and the potential world. I also focus on Violet’s past story, dissecting the narration in Jazz that has organic, causal links to reality. In the light of Deleuze’s false narrative, I ask an essential question: ‘How does the virtual space in the well in Violet’s memories operate this false narrative which results in creating her new life?’ By exploring the connection of space, time, and narrative, I investigate how space makes Violet create her life and story.
