Structural Relationships of Utility Value, Effort Cost, and Opportunity Cost with Class Engagement in a Second Foreign Language: Mediating Effect of Achievement Emotions and Moderating Effect of Expectancy

초록

This study examined the relationships among utility value, effort cost, opportunity cost, achievement emotions, and class engagement that high school students perceive in a second foreign language subject, as well as investigated whether these relationships vary according to expectancy levels. Data were collected from 347 high school students and analyzed using structural equation modeling and multigroup analysis. The findings were as follows: First, utility value positively predicted enjoyment, pride, and class engagement, whereas effort cost negatively predicted enjoyment and pride. Effort and opportunity costs positively predicted anxiety. Second, utility value positively influenced class engagement through the mediating effects of enjoyment and pride. However, effort cost negatively influenced class engagement through the mediating effects of enjoyment and pride, whereas opportunity cost positively influenced class engagement through mediating anxiety. Third, the effects of utility value and opportunity cost differed according to expectancy levels. For students with high expectancy, opportunity cost enhanced enjoyment and utility value positively predicted class engagement. However, the utility value of students with low expectancy did not increase class engagement, and opportunity costs increased anxiety. This study is significant in identifying the differential impacts of utility value, effort cost, and opportunity cost on achievement emotions and class engagement in second foreign language learning, and revealing the variations in these relationships by expectancy levels. Educational Impact and Implications : In the context of second foreign language learning, opportunity costs increased enjoyment for students with high-expectancy levels, and utility value promoted class engagement for them. However, for students with low-expectancy levels, utility values did not enhance class engagement. Therefore, different strategies are required to foster active class engagement. These may include helping high-expectancy students perceive costs as meaningful investments and providing low-expectancy students with opportunities to experience success.
