유필(儒筆)의 전통을 이은 국문학자 심재완의 서예

초록

This study is the first academic paper to illuminate the status of Mosan(慕山) Shim Jae-wan(1918–2011), a Korean literature scholar at Yeungnam University, as a scholarly calligrapher. Influenced by his father Toesan(退山) Shim Jang-hwan(1887–1940), Shim Jae-wan maintained a lifelong engagement with calligraphy. He left behind both calligraphic works and writings on calligraphy, contributing to the cultural development of the local community through his art. His research on calligraphy is examined through his academic papers on calligraphic history, his collection of calligraphy model books(beopcheop) and works, and his calligraphic criticism. In particular, his studies such as “A Study on the Calligraphic Style of the Gwanggaeto Stele” and “The Discovery and Calligraphic Analysis of the Silla Stele at Naengsu-ri” theoretically enriched the history of Korean calligraphy by exploring these historical masterpieces. Shim placed great importance on collecting beopcheopas educational materials and actively gathered works by calligraphers with whom he had scholarly ties. He also played a theoretical role through his calligraphy exhibition reviews published in newspapers, prefaces and critiques for exhibition catalogs, and critical essays. Shim’ s calligraphic style was shaped by the influence of his father and his studies under Seongjae(惺齋) Kim Tae-seok. He absorbed the brush spirit(pilyi, 筆意) of the Zhang Qian Steleas interpreted by Qing calligrapher He Shaoji(何紹基), and the formal aesthetics of Kim Jeong-hui’s clerical script, forming his own refined and literati-style calligraphy imbued with scholarly spirit. Among his works in epigraphy, the Nokye Poem Stele(Nogye Sibi) stands out as a representative literary monument. Notable large-scale pieces include the signboards Nangnamnuand Seonsan Eupseong South Gate, created during the restoration of the historic town fortress of Seonsan, his hometown. His unique calligraphic personality is especially evident in the title scripts(jeja) he wrote for books. He also paid attention to Korean script, producing works in the royal court style(gungche jeongja) and printed book style(panbonche).
