초록

This study attempted to find out what kind of life Chan Yu Ko, a cultural activist has lived and what kind of national identity changes he has undergone as a Korean in Japan. Born as the second generation of Koreans in Japan and raised in Japanese society, Chan Yu Ko spent his youth of conflict and avoidance ignoring or denying the reality that he was a Korean. In the middle of high school days, as he met with a senior, he began to think over his identity in earnest and a sense of national consciousness sprouted. Through his entrance to Chosun University and activities in ‘Munyedong’, he established an identity of homeland-oriented and national orientation. As time passed, his perception of discrimination against Koreans in Japan expanded to the perception of discrimination against foreigners in Japan, not just a problem of one nation. In addition, his movement to abolish national discrimination had a wide horizon as a universal human rights movement that transcended the boundaries of the nation. His choices at the bar of life are in contact with his past identity struggle, and through this, we are able to gauge the pain in the lives of Chan Yu Ko and Koreans in Japan.
