Conservative Therapy in Temporomandibular Joint Osteoarthritis Patients with Unilateral Loss of Posterior Teeth Support: A Case Report

Temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJ OA) is a prevalent severe degenerative temporomandibular disorder (TMD). The etiology of TMJ OA is complex, multifactorial, and not fully understood; however, the loss of posterior occlusal support is associated with osteoarthritic changes in the TMJ. Therefore, in addition to conservative treatment, alleviating the signs and symptoms of TMJ OA can be achieved by redistributing the load on the mandibular condyle through occlusal restoration of the posterior teeth. This case report presents improvements in clinical symptoms and osseous changes in the mandibular condyle following conservative treatment combined with prosthetic occlusal restoration in patients with TMJ OA and loss of molar support.
