The purpose of this study is to explore the philosophical foundation of John Dewey's educational theory, focusing on his epistemology and its pedagogical questions. The key points are summarized as follows: First, Dewey embraces a naturalistic view of humanity. According to Dewey, humans are evolving, organic beings who live a material existence characterized by challenges and resolutions. Humans are living beings who inherently require ‘the educational’. Education must be derived from life itself, revitalizing education as a process of living. Second, Dewey advocates for an instrumentalist theory of knowledge. Humans, as epistemological beings, generate knowledge through problem-solving. Students engage in inquiry-based activities, transforming their problem-solving abilities into learning capacities. Third, Dewey promotes experimental empiricism. To realize the capacity for knowledge production, experiences that involve problem-solving must be provided. Schools and teachers, in particular, should focus on offering educational experiences that develop problem-solving abilities.
