The Plantation of Ulster occupies a prominent place in both British and Irish history. It refers to the large-scale settlement of English and Scottish Protestants in the six counties of Ulster following the Flight of the Earls (1607), in the aftermath of defeat in the Nine Years’ War under James I. For the Crown and the English government, this provided an opportunity to bring Ulster - long regarded as the last stronghold of rebellion - firmly within English influence. To that end, they pursued the Anglicization of the province through mass Protestant migration, plantation settlements, and a sustained emphasis on colonial education. This study examines the background, objectives, and operation of the Free Schools established during the Plantation of Ulster, showing that schooling functioned not merely as a means of knowledge transmission but as a principal instrument of colonial governance. In the effort to secure durable control, Free Schools - charged with educating settlers’ children - were placed at the center of the Anglicization strategy and served as a key means of implanting an English social order, hierarchically structured under the Crown, within the new society forged by the Plantation.
