매개자로서의 국내 레지던시에 관한 고찰: 베커의 예술계 이론을 중심으로

Purpose: This study examines the mediating role of visual arts residencies in Korea using Howard S. Becker’s Art Worlds theory, focusing on how these programs shape collaborative practices and institutional dynamics in the contemporary art field. Methods: This qualitative study involved in-depth interviews with five experienced visual artists and three residency program managers. The interviews explored participants’ experiences in forming creative networks, negotiating artistic conventions, and navigating institutional structures. Results: The findings indicate that residencies serve as sites where artists from diverse backgrounds establish shared conventions, facilitating innovation. These programs also foster horizontal and vertical networks among artists, administrators, and experts, though such efforts are often hindered by rigid programmatic structures and inconsistent support. As institutional mediators, residencies confer social legitimacy through gatekeeping but are simultaneously constrained by excessive institutional demands and centralized hierarchies. Conclusion: This study concludes that residencies function as crucial institutional mediators activating core mechanisms within the art world. However, persistent structural limitations, such as an overemphasis on production over exchange and limited opportunities for collective action, call for their fundamental reconfiguration.
