2022 개정 한국사1 교과서의 서술 방식 검토 － 7세기 중반 대외관계사를 중심으로 －

In the content structure of Korean History 1, as finalized in Ministry of Education Notification No. 2022-33, premodern political history and foreign relations are organized as separate categories. However, considering that Korea’s ancient political development was closely intertwined with diplomatic relations with neighboring states, this structural division often obscures the broader historical context in textbook narratives. Still, the separation allows for a broader overview of Korea's premodern foreign relations, which can be viewed as a positive aspect. A comparative analysis of nine revised textbooks based on the 2022 curriculum reveals several characteristics in the way ancient foreign relations are narrated. Unlike the Goryeo and Joseon periods, the ancient era—marked by the rise and fall of multiple polities—lacks clear thematic framing, often resulting in generic and unengaging section titles. To create a more coherent account, textbook authors employ different strategies: prioritizing political and diplomatic aspects while relocating cultural exchange to other sections, focusing solely on cultural interactions, or presenting both dimensions in a simplified manner. The most significant issue stemming from the division of political and foreign relations histories is the difficulty in realizing the core idea of the 2022 curriculum—that Korean history has evolved in conjunction with changes in the international order. Events such as the Goguryeo–Sui/Tang wars and Silla’s so-called unification wars of the Three Kingdoms exemplify how political history and foreign relations are deeply intertwined. The separation of these narratives hinders a proper understanding of the 7th-century East Asian geopolitical context and obscures the broader historical significance of these turning points in Korean history.
