초등학교 사회 교과서의 어휘 분포 양상 분석 - 기초어휘, 사고도구어, 전문어 명사를 중심으로 -

The purpose of this study is to investigate the distribution patterns of basic vocabulary, academic vocabulary, and specialized vocabulary in elementary school social studies textbooks. Specifically, it examines how these nouns are distributed across different grade levels and subject areas in the 2015 revised curriculum social studies textbooks published by MiraeN. The basic vocabulary analysis followed the classification system established by the National Institute of Korean Language (2023), categorizing vocabulary into five levels based on subject areas. Level 1 vocabulary corresponds to the pre- school stage, Level 2 to grades 1-2 of elementary school, Level 3 to grades 3-4, Level 4 to grades 5-6, and Level 5 to middle school grades 1-3. In the geography domain, 867 words were classified at Level 1, 277 at Level 2, 313 at Level 3, 260 at Level 4, and 92 at Level 5. The political science domain contains 674 words at Level 1, 338 at Level 2, 288 at Level 3, 296 at Level 4, and 85 at Level 5. The history domain includes 730 words at Level 1, 310 at Level 2, 348 at Level 3, 382 at Level 4, and 165 at Level 5. In the social and cultural studies domain, 356 words were identified at Level 1, 96 at Level 2, 60 at Level 3, 29 at Level 4, and 13 at Level 5. Finally, the economics domain comprises 151 words at Level 1, 171 at Level 2, 156 at Level 3, 139 at Level 4, and 32 at Level 5. Academic vocabulary was analyzed using the classification system proposed by Shin et al. (2024), which categorizes vocabulary into four levels based on grade level. Level 1 corresponds to grades 1-4 of elementary school, Level 2 to grades 5-6, Level 3 to middle school, and Level 4 to high school. In the third grade, there are 28 words at Level 1, 51 at Level 2, 27 at Level 3, and 1 at Level 4. In the fourth grade, there are 33 words at Level 1, 83 at Level 2, 42 at Level 3, and 4 at Level 4. For fifth grade, there are 38 words at Level 1, 126 at Level 2, 114 at Level 3, and 16 at Level 4. In the sixth grade, there are 36 words at Level 1, 145 at Level 2, 119 at Level 3, and 16 at Level 4. The analysis of specialized vocabulary was conducted by selecting and presenting terms based on the content framework and achievement standards of the 2015 revised curriculum, along with the learning objectives, side notes, and index vocabulary found in textbooks. The geography domain encompasses 187 words and 36 phrases, the political science domain includes 132 words and 51 phrases, the history domain comprises 141 words and 57 phrases, the social and cultural studies domain contains 22 words and 6 phrases, and the economics domain features 74 words and 28 phrases. The results of this study can be directly applied to vocabulary education and can also be used to reclassify vocabulary levels and lists by taking into account factors such as “semantic field,” “semantic relationships,” and “morphological characteristics.”
