This study examined the relationship between rainfall and the water levels of the Cheonggyecheon Supyo(Hydrological gauge) by analyzing records from the Giuje-deunglok(Records of Rain Rituals) and the Seungjeongwon Ilgi(Diaries of the Royal Secretariat). The Su-pyo records were utilized as reference materials to determine whether rituals such as the Giuje(rain-invoking ritual) and Gicheongje(rain-stop ritual) were conducted. However, the extracted Supyo records from both sources represent only about 5% of total rainfall days, making it challenging to estimate rainfall amounts after the 17th century. Despite this limitation, the Cheonggyecheon Supyo measured water levels in the same area where rainfall occurred. As Cheonggyecheon is typically a dry stream, the baseline water level of the Su-pyo starts at zero. Furthermore, Supyo officials would monitor and measure the water level during rainfall, allowing for relatively consistent measurement timing. Under these conditions, the water level of Cheonggyecheon was significantly influenced by daily rainfall, with a 1 chon(寸, 20.7mm) increase in rainfall corresponding to approximately a 1.26 cheok(尺, 20.7cm) rise in water level. This finding supports King Yeongjo's assertion that a 1 chon increase in rainfall would result in a 1 cheok rise in Cheonggyecheon’s water level, indicating the usefulness of this estimation.
