김사량의 「향수」에 나타난 기독교 의식 -전향과 세계주의의 의미를 중심으로

This article analyzes the narrative of political conversion and cosmopolitanism in Kim Sa-ryang's “Nostalgia” from a Christian perspective. The Christian elements scattered throughout “Nostalgia” provide a key to elucidating the dual consciousness of political conversion that underpins the narrative. “Nostalgia,” released in Japan in Japanese, contains over 40 overt Christian expressions. This is because the Christian consciousness of “Nostalgia” was a smokescreen for Japanese Christianity combined with the imperial system. On the surface, Christian salvation rituals appear to be a means of political conversion for opium addicts and a reconversion to their homeland. As the train ticket to Pyongyang for Lee Hyeon, purchased with the blood money of opium addicts, appears, the image of Gaya weeping in front of a picture frame of a bleeding Jesus and the 300 won for the reconversion of Goryeo celadon and Joseon white porcelain are connected. In particular, the phrases from “Lamentations” that Gaya unconsciously blurted out and the message of regeneration that Lee Hyeon gave to Gaya through “Jeremiah” are reminiscent of the Jewish narrative of betrayal, punishment, and reconversion (restoration) to Jehovah. These devices lead the bilingual Lee Hyeon, who can never erase Japan, to a “reverse political conversion”—that is, to the Christian salvation of the Joseon—rather than concluding his consciousness of salvation in “Nostalgia” with Japanese Christianity. This truly demonstrates Kim Sa-ryang's meticulous strategy of realizing his nationalistic orientation through Christianity from the most transnationalist position.
