Industrial Linkages in Korea’s Gaming Industry

초록

This study evaluates the economic impact of Korea’s gaming industry through an input–output analysis. This study defines the gaming industry as the production of gaming content and related services, restructuring the Bank of Korea’s input–output tables to analyze data from 2016 to 2022. In 2022, the industry’s total output reached 22.8 trillion KRW, a 9.4% increase from the previous year, with 87.3% generated by final consumption. Private consumption and exports accounted for 74.3% and accounted 12.8% of output, respectively. The industry created 13.4 trillion KRW in value added, with a value added ratio of 59.1%, well above the manufacturing average. The gaming industry’s contribution to Korea’s gross domestic product (GDP) was 0.59%. While forward and backward linkages were below average, the industry showed strong connections with software, advertising, and business support services. Its reliance on domestic inputs kept import inducement effects low. The sector nearly doubled in size between 2016 and 2022 and continued to expand even during the COVID-19 period. Overall, Korea’s gaming industry is assessed as a high value added, low import-dependent sector with strong growth potential.
