This study aims to analyze the associations between sarcopenia, metabolic syndrome risk factors, physical activity levels, and nutrient intake by applying the appendicular skeletal muscle mass and handgrip strength criteria of the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS) to elderly women in Korea. The findings will provide fundamental data for the prevention and management of sarcopenia. Using data from the 9th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2022–2023), this study included 811 women aged 64 years or older. To compare and analyze sociodemographic characteristics, metabolic syndrome risk factors, physical activity levels, and nutrient intake according to sarcopenia status, a complex sample t-test was conducted. Additionally, a complex sample multiple regression analysis and logistic regression analysis were performed to identify key factors associated with sarcopenia. The sarcopenia group had significantly lower BMI and LBM than the normal group, and their LDL-C and TC levels were also significantly lower. Furthermore, the sarcopenia group exhibited lower protein and carbohydrate intake than the normal group, with a trend indicating that increased carbohydrate intake was associated with a reduced risk of sarcopenia. No significant differences in physical activity levels were observed between the two groups. These findings suggest that maintaining an appropriate BMI and LBM, as well as ensuring adequate protein and carbohydrate intake, is essential for preventing sarcopenia. Additionally, physical activity alone may be insufficient for sarcopenia prevention, highlighting the need for a multifaceted management strategy that integrates nutritional intake.
