초록

This paper examines the ironware exchange between Gaya(加耶) and Wa(倭) as part of Korea-Japan relations studies. This research has demonstrated that Gaya's ironware and technology have significantly influenced Wa. Evidence shows that blacksmith tools, farming implements, spiral-patterned ironware, and miniature iron artifacts found in Wa were originated from Gaya. However, certain items previously attributed to Gaya—specifically axes and iron bells—are now considered to be of Silla origin. Conversely, Wa exported several types of ironware to Gaya, including curved swords, armor, and spears. The exchange across the Korean Strait involved not only finished iron products but also the movement of master craftsmen and manufacturing techniques. While Gaya shared its advanced ironworking technologies—including twisting, casting, and inlay techniques—with Wa, the latter provided rice, salt, and labor in exchange.
