THE INTERNATIONAL COMPARISON OF MARITIME LOGISTICS EFFICIENCY FOR 29 MAJOR COASTAL COUNTRIES

Purpose : This paper examines integrated maritime logistics efficiency at the national level using DEA-CCR, BCC, and super-efficiency DEA(SEDEA). In addition, this paper investigates a difference between the selected 29 countries' maritime logistics efficiency and overall logistics performance as an ad-hoc analysis.<br /> Design/methodology/approach : Adopting the DEA and SE-DEA approach, this study evaluates the maritime logistics efficiency scores and rankings of 29 selected countries. The input variables are the number of container ports, the container fleet of control, and the level of seaport service. The output variables are container throughput and Liner Shipping Connectivity Index. As an ad-hoc analysis, we classify the countries by a 2x2 matrix based on the ranking of efficiency and LPI score to derive common characteristics.<br /> Main findings : Asian countries showed higher efficiency, and European countries showed higher LPI scores. These results might be derived from this difference in port development patterns. Additionally, the main cause of inefficiency in Europe and Japan might be attributed to the high fleet capacity of control.<br /> Originality/value : This paper empirically analyzes a new integrated model that could measure maritime transport and port, especially from a container shipping and port perspective. Consequently, this study may provide valuable implications for coastal countries to set more efficient directions for maritime logistics investment and policy.
