With the increasing penetration of renewable energy sources and the corresponding decrease in power system inertia, the potential for frequency instability in the grid has become a growing concern. In response, there is active research into grid-forming inverters, which are designed to mimic the dynamic characteristics of synchronous generators, thereby providing inertia and damping to the power system. A key aspect of enhancing frequency stability, particularly concerning the frequency nadir, involves integrating rapid primary frequency control with the inertia response. This paper introduces a novel control strategy that not only replicates the basic characteristics of synchronous generators but also significantly enhances the frequency nadir by offering a faster primary frequency response than existing grid-forming inverter controls. © 2024 IEEE.
