초록

This paper viewed the core of Cho Ji-hoon’s poetics as ‘Li-monism’, and confirmed the basis in the early prose “great way no gate(대도무문)”. And we carefully examined his poetics by dividing it into 1) the universe as a compositional category, 2) the generative structure of the universe, 3) the core terms of poetics, ‘life’, 4) the fundamental homogeneity of individual life and cosmic life, and 5) the ontological superiority of poet and poetry. Based on this analysis, the structure of his poetics that he envisions can be summarized as follows. First of all, there is ‘a transcendental source(or an infinite existence)’ or ‘first cause’ called ‘Great Nature(대자연)’. ‘Life(생명)’ is the generating force that realizes the original image(or idea) of Great Nature, and all the phenomenal world in which this life unfolds the original image of Great Nature is ‘universe(우주)’ or ‘nature(자연)’. And there is the ‘poet’ as a superior being who grasps the essence of this life, and the world created by the poet as another great nature becomes ‘poetry’. And this structure is similar to the theoretical structure of the ‘Li-Monism’, which extremely emphasized the role of ‘Li’ among various schools of Korean Neo-Confucianism. We should pay more attention to his poetics in the future, given that the level and scope of his poetics goes beyond what has been achieved in modern Korean poetics. However, it has limitations in that it is unclear how much his poetics will help explain the specific aspects of poems compared to its grandeur. In the future, this review will be dealt with in another paper.
