‘V₁着V₂’와 ‘一边V₁一边V₂’의 대조 분석

This study, from a functionalist perspective, analyzes the differences between the constructions ‘V₁着V₂’ and ‘一边V₁一边V₂’ based on the premise that their formal differences lead to distinct functions, which in turn define them as separate constructions. The constructions ‘V₁着V₂’ and ‘一边V₁一边V₂’ possess its own unique constructional meaning and distinct semantic structures, respectively. The construction ‘V₁着V₂’ conveys the meaning that ‘an action is carried out in a specific manner(state)’ and adopts a ‘manner(state)+action’ structure. In contrast, the construction ‘一边V₁一边V₂’ signifies that ‘two actions coexist within the same time frame’ and adopts an ‘action+action’ structure. These differences in semantic structures are also reflected in two types of selectional restrictions. First, in terms of lexical selection, the ‘V₁’ in the construction ‘V₁着V₂’ tends to have strong stativity or accompany another action. Conversely, the ‘V₁’ in the construction ‘一边V₁一边V₂’ is a typically highly dynamic verb or does not inherently accompany another action. Second, in terms of discourse constraints, the construction ‘V₁着V₂’ is used when a contrast is pragmatically implied between a situation where a specific manner(V1) is realized and one where it is not. In contrast, the construction ‘一边V₁一边V₂’ appears in contexts where two actions simply coexist without such contrast.
