This study investigates the behavior and design of U-shaped composite beams that integrate reinforced concrete and steel to achieve enhanced structural performance and improved constructability. To address the limitations of traditional composite beams that require temporary formwork during construction, a U-shaped composite beam system was developed using the steel section itself as the formwork. The research aims to propose a novel design method based on sectional strain distribution. Experimental tests were conducted on U-shaped composite beams to examine their structural behavior, followed by the development of a finite element analysis (FEA) model. The FEA model was validated by comparing load-displacement curves and strain distributions with experimental results, showing good agreement. A parametric study was then performed to analyze the influence of shear connector spacing on composite behavior. Based on the analysis results, a strain-based design method was proposed using section analysis. The proposed method demonstrated improved accuracy in predicting structural performance and provides a practical approach for the design of U-shaped composite beams.
