초록

Lignin is a biopolymer by-product of cellulosic waste in the paper and renewable fuel industries and can be a cheap raw material for producing high-value-added materials. These value-added products can be used in various industries, such as agriculture, food materials, fine chemicals, animal husbandry, and cosmetics. Recently, various properties of lignin and its derivatives have been explored to develop drugs for the treatment of human diseases, including microbial and viral infection, oxidative stress, metabolic disorders, and cancers. For this regard, advanced techniques are introduced to degrade lignin properly into monomers to express high selectivity for securing human diseases by the composition of the monomers. In this review, we will introduce new applications of lignin and its derivatives in pharmaceutics as a result of its prominent biological activities by selectively cleaving or modifying the lignin polymer. © 2021 Elsevier B.V.
