This paper examines the evolution of research perspectives on paddled pottery, the explanations regarding its origins, and the diversity of paddling techniques based on the Chaîne Opératoire approache. At first, through a historical review of the transition from early recognition of paddled pottery to contemporary understandings, i t can be noted that there was a significant shift in the research paradigm around the year 2000. Until the 1990s, researchers primarily identified the results of paddling as patterns, focusing on the genealogy of ceramic assemblage and its temporal and spatial classifications. However, from the 2000s onward, as paddling began to be conceptualized as a technological behavior, analyses of paddled pottery from the Chaîne Opératoire perspective significantly shifted interpretative frameworks. Furthermore, the identification of paddling techniques on the Plain Pottery of Bronze A geprompted inquiries into the possibility of paddling emerging independently without prior traditions. Through a review of ethnographic survey data from traditional pottery workshops globally, findings indicate that while paddling methods have emerged independently in certain regions, the interaction between paddling techniques within specific areas cannot be overlooked. Lastly, this paper addresses the integration of the paddling action within the forming process. It posits that if paddling is deemed as a technological behavior, it transcends a mere finishing technique; it encompasses both the final shaping of the vessel' final appearances and the preparing a primary form(roughout). Compared to the technique employed during the Three Kingdoms period and thereafter, the paddling technique of the Plain Pottery could be distinguished from it in its position within the forming process as well as its relationship to subsequent surface treatments.
