An ATB-account of PG in the box theory

This study explores the similarities between parasitic gaps (PG) and Across-the-Board (ATB) constructions, particularly their multi-gap nature. Unlike typical formations, both PG and ATB arise in derivation not through Merge but via the FormSet (FS) operation. Addressing and reconciling conflicting claims about their distinct properties, the study adopts a unified approach and incorporates Williams' (1990) perspective on coordination licensing PG constructions and treats PG as a variant of ATB-movement. Utilizing Chomsky’s (2023a, 2023b) box theory, the research offers a comprehensive account of PG constructions within the Strong Minimalist Thesis (SMT), adhering to the simplest structure-building operation, Merge, without relying on the distinction between A- and A’-movement.
