파르메니데스 단편의 세 길 해석에 관하여 -모순율과 갈등을 중심으로-

초록

Parmenides (Παρμενίδης)’ fragment On Nature (Περί Φύσεως) unfolds through the metaphor of ways, where the total number of ways presented in the fragment is three. However, some interpretations argue for only two ways. These two-path interpretations fail to clearly illustrate the dichotomy structure of the fragment and overly diminish the significance of the Doxa (δόξα) section. By adopting the three-path interpretation, the dichotomy structure becomes more apparent, and it also reveals the principle of non- contradiction underlying Parmenides’ fragment. Additionally, the three- ways interpretation—comprising the way of Being, the way of Not being, and the way of Doxa—better establishes the status of the way of Doxa. This approach uncovers the significance of the Doxa section, which has been relatively overlooked. This paper critiques the shortcomings of the two-path interpretation, particularly as proposed by Alexander Nehamas, and presents John Palmer’s three-path interpretation as a viable alternative. Furthermore, it explores how the three-path interpretation highlights Parmenides’ insights into the conflicts faced by mortals on the way of Doxa and demonstrates how he offers the way of Being, a path aligned with the principle of non-contradiction, as a solution to such conflicts.
