The Relationship Between PTSD Symptoms and Posttraumatic Growth in Firefighters: The Dual Mediating Effects of Emotional Recognition Clarity and Emotional Self exposure

초록

This study investigated the dual mediating effects of emotional recognition clarity and emotional self-disclosure on the relationship between PTSD symptoms and post-traumatic growth among firefighters. A total of 415 frontline firefighters in Metropolitan City D participated in the survey, and data were analyzed using PROCESS Macro Model 6. The results indicated that PTSD symptoms negatively influenced post-traumatic growth and that this relationship was partially mediated by emotional recognition clarity. Higher levels of PTSD symptoms were associated with a reduced ability to recognize one’s emotions, which subsequently lowered levels of post-traumatic growth. Although emotional self-disclosure was also reduced by PTSD symptoms, it was not found to have a significant mediating effect on post-traumatic growth. The total indirect effect was statistically significant, and the mediating effect of emotional recognition clarity was greater than that of emotional self-disclosure. These findings suggest that PTSD not only results in pathological outcomes but can be transformed into opportunities for psychological growth depending on individual emotional awareness and expressive strategies. The study highlights the importance of psychological interventions aimed at enhancing emotional recognition clarity and PTSD symptom reduction to foster post-traumatic growth in firefighters.
