초록

This study tries to evaluate recent application of organic residue analysis in Korean archaeology. Our knowledge on the past human society can be broaden only with the exhaustive investigation on the every aspects of archaeological records. Majority of human daily activities involve various different kinds of organisms and they tend to remain in archaeological context as byproducts. However, due to the high acidity of sediments of Korean peninsula that does not allow long-term preservation of organic remains, we have been short of critical information on the activities of these early dwellers. In this setting, the analysis on ancient organic residues extracted from the archaeological samples using GC-MS and isotope analysis can contribute to our understanding of the true nature of past society. Ceramic vessels and soils samples can contain well-preserved organic residues originating from past human activities. The potsherds and soil samples for the analysis in this paper were collected from various archaeological contexts throughout the peninsula. The results revealed some of the unknown aspects of past human activities. For example, at Jukbyeon-ri, an open-air Neolithic coastal dwelling site, we were able to see routine consumption of terrestrial animals. Our result revealed that organic residue analysis may seriously contribute for broadening our understanding of human past.
