청동기시대 부장용 마연토기의 변화와 요인—진주 대평리 취락 출토품을 중심으로

This study investigates the changes and underlying causes of the long-term production and use of burnished pottery for burial purposes during the Bronze Age. Applying Darwinian evolutionary archaeology and the chaîne opératoire method, the research focuses on artifacts excavated from the Daepyeong-ri settlement in Jinju, presumed to be a production site for this pottery in the Nam River basin. By analyzing each production stage—material preparation, forming, drying, and firing— the study identified both stable and changing technologies. While techniques like clay preparation and coiling remained consistent, changes were observed in size (miniaturization), rim shape, burnishing direction, and decorative elements. These technological traits resulted in seven distinct chaînes opératoires (A–G), revealing different dynamics in how potters adapted over time. To understand these dynamics, the study reconstructed historical scenarios based on consumption patterns and changes in regional and settlement-level material culture. The pottery was consumed in eight patterns, with shifts in burial quantity, location, and structure. Broader material changes also occurred, such as increased dwellings, expanded settlement areas, and the disappearance of pottery patterns. In summary, minor adjustments like burnishing direction reflected continuity, while major changes in size and decoration corresponded with significant shifts in consumption and material culture. These findings suggest that social transformations led to new demands, prompting potters to significantly alter their production practices.
