This study aims to summarize the main academic achievements concerning the Cheongje Stele(菁堤碑), which records the construction process of the ancient reservoir Cheongje in the Silla period, and to propose future research tasks. The stele is a double-sided monument inscribed with the Byeongjin Inscription(丙辰銘) and the Jeongwon Inscription(貞元銘). Previous research has explored both philological and archaeological aspects. Studies on the Byeongjin Inscription have clarified the construction date of the reservoir, methods of mobilizing labor, application of measurement systems, and interpretation of technical terms related to hydraulic facilities. Meanwhile, research on the Jeongwon Inscription has examined its connections with nationwide embankment repairs during King Wonseong’s reign, the rise of local elites, and various understandings of the term Beop-gongbu(法工夫). The stele serves as a valuable historical source for understanding the socio-economic conditions of the Silla period. Additionally, the Cheongje Stele was made of diorite and displays intentional damage likely caused by bullets, which invites further consideration from a heritage preservation perspective. Future research should include comprehensive investigations into its original location, provenance of the stone material, and historical context of the damage. Such interdisciplinary approaches will contribute to deepening our understanding of the stele’s historical significance.
