Humulus japonicus is known to have health benefits, but little is known about its effect on skin health. In this study, we investigated the anti-oxidation properties and potential impact on skin health using Humulus japonicus extracted phenolic compounds. In anti-oxidation activity, DPPH and 2,2'-Azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) radical cation decolorization radical decolorization activity of hot water and 70% ethanol extracted phenolic compounds were approximately 69.25, 81.65, and 97.97, 97.58% at 200 μg/mL, respectively. PF and TBARS was 1.14 PF, 1.11 PF and 92.85, 88.60% at 200 μg/mL, which were higher than hydroxytoluen. In skin health, Humulus japonicus ethanol extracted phenolic compounds at 50-200 μg/mL inhibited the activity of elastase and collagenase by 42.83 and 84.22%, which suggests a potential anti-wrinkle effect. For skin-whitening and anti-inflammation effect, tyrosinase and hyaluronidase activity were inhibited by 38.36 and 21.71% in ethanol extract. Our results showed that HJE has remarkable antioxidant, anti-wrinkle, whitening, and potential anti-inflammatory effects, which suggests its potential as a beneficial source for anti-skin aging.
