This study explores how literary and dramatic works set in Ōoku (大奥)—the Edo-period enclave for women—portray female narratives and incorporate modern concepts of gender equality (SDGs Goal 5). From Funabashi Seiichi’s Ejima Ikushima (1950s) to Asano Taeko’s Ōoku (2000s) and the 2024 Taiga Drama adaptation, these works progressively dismantle male-centric structures. The latest version, in particular, positions women not simply as victims or schemers, but as active participants in both Ōoku’s internal dynamics and broader shogunate politics, thus emphasizing equality and empowerment. It deftly weaves issues like childbirth control, family-based gender roles, and women’s rivalry and solidarity into the historical drama, effectively reflecting SDGs Goal 5 (women’s public engagement, sexual and reproductive rights, and gender-equality awareness). By reconceiving women’s narratives, these works demonstrate how popular culture can advance social values beyond merely revisiting historical events.
