A Study on Russian Discourse Marker Skazhem

초록

This study examines how the Russian discourse marker скажемis described in both general lexical dictionaries and specialized discourse marker dictionaries, and draws attention to the notable differences in the ways these sources approach скажем. In lexical dictionaries, the primary entries typically present its lexical meaning as a verb of speech, while its function as a discourse marker—where the lexical or aspectual meaning is weakened—is placed in secondary entries. In contrast, discourse marker dictionaries focus extensively on describing its discourse-related functions. Interestingly, most dictionaries categorize the principal functions of the discourse particle скажемinto two major types: (1) exemplification, and (2) the presentation of hypothetical situations. In many cases, even when both functions are mentioned, they are treated as mutually exclusive or entirely separate. When functioning as a marker of exemplification, скажемis described as equivalent to the discourse particle например("for example"); when presenting hypothetical situations, it is seen as performing a role similar to допустим("let's suppose"). However, analysis of actual usage examples reveals that there are contexts in which скажем and например are not interchangeable. This suggests that the distinction between the two can be explained in terms of the informational hierarchy that exists between speaker and addressee. Applying Prince’s framework of assumed familiarity, it becomes evident that скажемis applicable across the entire lower domain of the hierarchy, involving more active and discretionary speaker involvement. In contrast, напримерis more tightly associated with logical exemplification, and therefore operates within a more limited scope of the assumed familiarity scale. This clearly highlights the attitudinal nature of скажемas a discourse marker. The issue lies in the tension between the speaker’s intention to select and present an arbitrary example in spontaneous speech, and the simultaneous desire to maximize the addressee’s acceptance of this choice. Within this tension, the speaker tends to weaken the assertiveness of their utterance and adopt a more flexible and cautious attitude. It is precisely at this point that the previously considered mutually exclusive functions—exemplification and the presentation of hypothetical situations—become cognitively interconnected.
