초록
The purpose of this study was to examine the body image characteristics of Generation Z high school students from the perspective of Jean Baudrillard’s consumer society. To achieve this goal, ethnography, a qualitative research method, was utilized. Participants included the researcher as a cultural technician and eight primary students (four male and four female). Data were collected through open-ended questionnaires, participant observation (field notes), image data, and interviews(photovoice interviews, supplementary group interviews, and individual in-depth interviews). Data analysis followed the general data analysis procedures suggested by Creswell(2022). The findings were categorized into three categories: the body of consumption (“The body is for show”; “Does it look like an ideal body?”; “I accept it as is!”), the body of desire(“I want a body like that”; “I’m dissatisfied with my body”), and the body of preference (“The hidden meaning of the body”; “I need a workout outfit!”). Interpreting the study results from Jean Baudrillard's perspective on consumer society, we find that Generation Z high school students, firstly, perceive their bodies as a symbol, consumed as a distinct sign from others, and secondly, exhibit characteristics of being thoroughly objectified by others during the process of forming their body image. Consequently, future educational approaches to body image should be implemented for Generation Z.
