Uplift and Incision Rates After the Last Interglacial Stage in the Estuary Coast of Bulgapcheon River, Yeonggwang

초록

This study was conducted on the Quaternary alluvial sediment layers along the Bulgap River estuary, located in Baeksu-eup, Yeonggwang-gun, Jeollanam-do, with the purpose of estimating the paleo sea level and uplift rate during the last interglacial period on the west coast of the Korean Peninsula. For the characteristics of terrace sediment layer outcrop identified, samples for grain size and major element analysis were continuously collected using slabs, and OSL dating samples were collected to determine the sedimentation period. Additionally, an elevation survey was conducted for calculating uplift and river incision rates. As a result, the gray silt layer developed at the lower part of the terrace sediment was estimated to be a tidal flat formed near high sea level during the MIS 5a period, and the yellow-brown sand layer developed at the upper part was allocated to be a fluvial layer during the MIS 4 period. Through these results, the lower layer was interpreted as the marine terrace formed in MIS 5a, and the upper layer was interpreted as the fluvial terrace formed in MIS 4. The uplift and incision rates were calculated to be approximately 0.055 and 0.098m/ka using age dating results and elevation, respectively. It was confirmed that these uplift and incision rates were in good agreement with previous studies.
