This study aims to investigate female suppression by domestic privatization in early modern England focusing on The Revenger’s Tragedy. England at that time suffered from changes in social, economic, and religious areas. It was said that household manuals of the time were concerned about the proper supervision, chastisement and education of women as well as the household budgeting by men. Furthermore it was insisted that such household management could please God and be profitable to the household concerned. As the result of the Protestant patriarchal atmosphere, the changes in economy and society attributed to the privatization of the family by which women were considered as disciplinary objects. In The Revenger’s Tragedy, Vindice tries to manage women and household finances for keeping his honor. Honour is said to be symbolic capital. It is thought that transaction involving honour could protect family. In the process of revenge for Duke, Vindice tries to make his mother act as a bawd of her daughter. His intention is to confirm whether his sister can protect virginity as symbolic capital from seducers or not. Under surveillance of the family, Vindice employs symbolic violence attacking his mother and sister verbally. Vindice acting as hierarchical head in the absence of his father evaluates his sister’s virginity as symbolic capital resulting from honor and fetishes chastity for domestic management. Unfortunately the theme of Vindice’s surveillance and suppression towards domestic women isn’t limited to only Middleton’s era. It is expected that the theme of the symbolic capital and symbolic violence to family women Middleton depicts in The Revenger’s Tragedy will continue in the 21st century.
