When interpreting classical literary works, the first step in such research must involve deciphering the vocabulary, syntax, and orthographic characteristics of the era in which the work was created. This study aims to interpret the term ‘goesiri’ in the Goryeo poetry ‘Samogok’ and uncover the themes and elements of this poetry. First, it is observed that when the auxiliary particle ‘-do’ is attached to the preceding clause, as in ‘homido’ and ‘abeonimdo’, or to the following clause, as in ‘deullido’, the structure ‘∼l rido eopda’ must be followed by another ‘∼l ri(do) eopda’ construction for the sentence to maintain natural cohesion. While previous studies have contended that the dependent noun ‘ri’ did not exist in Middle and Early Modern Korean, this research confirms its presence in these periods based on linguistic evidence. Additionally, ‘goesiri’ is analyzed as ‘goe- + -(eu)si- + -(eu)l + ri’, with the phoneme ‘l’ in ‘-l ri’ undergoing elision due to phonological similarity. In Samogok, the hoe(homi) and the sickle(nat) serve distinct functions. While the sickle is sharper than the hoe, this does not necessarily imply its superiority. Similarly, although both father(abeonim) and mother(eomeonim) are parents, a mother’s love is generally regarded as more profound in the context of filial affection. However, this does not suggest that a father’s love is of lesser significance. From this perspective, just as a hoe cannot attain the sharpness of a sickle, Samogok conveys the notion that a father cannot love to the same extent as a mother, ultimately emphasizing the boundless nature of maternal love.
