초록

This paper explores the historical significance of the 1520 Comunero Revolt of Castile by analyzing its impact within both the broader trajectory of constitutional politics in Spain, and the immediate transition from the Trastámara to the Habsburg political systems. In four parts, the article provides a brief overview of the revolt, its historiography from the nineteenth to the twentieth centuries, discussion of J.A. Maravall’s “first modern revolution” thesis within the contemporary state of literature, and analysis of the rebellion’s cause within the contingent, late medieval to the early modern transitional context. The overarching arguments resulting from the analyses are as follows. From the long-term, historiographical perspective, the Comunero Revolt served as a contemplative framework through which the Spanish intellectuals across a broad ideological spectrum articulated their worldviews, beliefs regarding the proper social order, and the Spainish society’s relationship with both the wider world and its national past. Yet within the contingent, early sixteenth century context, the revolt functioned as the primary transitional crisis through which the new, Habsburg pact of governance arose from the preceding Trastámara system, exposing the political contradictions accumulated during the preceding Isabel I’s reign in the process of its fomentation and outbreak.
