일본어 원격회화에서 한국인・인도네시아인 일본어 학습자의 청자행동과 화제내용 및 전환방식에 대한 상관관계 고찰

This study examines Japanese conversations conducted in remote interaction settings between Korean-Japanese and Indonesian-Japanese dyads. Focusing on listener behavior—including verbal responses such as backchannels, repetition, alignment, and empathic comments, as well as laughter and laughter-accompanied responses (hereafter referred to as ‘integrative listener behavior’)—the study analyzes the correlation between these behaviors and patterns of topic content and topic shifts. By comparing the patterns of listener behavior and topic transitions observed in interactions involving Korean and Indonesian learners of Japanese, the study seeks to identify characteristics of their pragmatic competence and discourse organization. The key findings are as follows: First, regarding the correlation between topic content and listener behavior, Korean learners tended to structure their conversations around experience sharing and cultural comparisons, frequently using listener responses to convey empathy and build interactional alignment. In contrast, Indonesian learners actively employed listener behaviors centered on experience sharing and laughter, demonstrating a cheerful and engaged conversational style. Second, Korean learners frequently used backchannels, but showed lower rates of evaluative or empathic comments and integrative behaviors involving laughter. Their conversations also exhibited a relatively higher frequency of abrupt or unmarked topic shifts, indicating some difficulty in maintaining smooth discourse continuity. Third, Indonesian learners used backchannels at a level comparable to native Japanese speakers and demonstrated a relatively rich use of integrative listener behaviors that contributed to smoother topic transitions. While laughter frequently functioned as a key listener response, in some instances it also appeared to interrupt the flow of conversation. Additionally, instances of abrupt and unilateral topic shifts were observed, including unmarked transitions without appropriate listener responses. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the pragmatic tendencies and intercultural discourse strategies employed by language learners in remote interaction contexts.
