초록
This study analyzes anti-Muslim migrant hate discourse in South Korea through the case of the Daegu Mosque Construction Controversy, which has persisted for over a decade since 2014. Using approximately 70,000 YouTube and Naver News comments (about 1.1 million tokens) as the target corpus, and twelve existing Korean hate speech corpora (about 2.8 million tokens) as reference corpora, we applied corpus-assisted discourse analysis methods. Keyword analysis revealed that the controversy had expanded from a local conflict to a national and international issue following the pig’s head incident in front of the mosque construction site in October 2022. Lexical items such as dwaejigogi (“pork”) and hijab (“headscarf”) functioned as cultural tools of online and offline violence. Repetitive use of negatively charged expressions contributed to entrenchment at the individual level and conventionalization at the societal level, thereby reinforcing and spreading hatred toward specific groups. Furthermore, the hate discourse extended beyond the domain of religion to encompass regional and political domains. This study provides empirical evidence for the structure and diffusion mechanisms of Islamophobic discourse in Korean society and offers foundational insights for future research on counter-speech.
