In this paper I showed that the Russian verb казаться covers properties not only as a perceptual verb but also as a cognitive and mental verb. Additionaly it also covers properties as a epistemic modality marker. The three aspects of the verb казаться-perceptual verb-cognitive verb-epistemic modality marker-are transitively extended and constitute a linear continuum. Thus, the distinctive nature of perception embodied by казаться as a perceptual verb is reflected in the distinctive natures of judgment embodied by казаться as a cognitive verb. These characteristics are relative, direct, temporary, provisional, possible deviation from reality, context-dependent, and fallible, and in practical contexts, these properties combine to give rise to the use of the epistemic modalityh marker кажется. The problems with Яковлева's attempt to identify кажется and other epistemic modality markers in terms of the characteristics of the situation, the logical relationship among situations, and the information richness of the situation are as follows. The qualities he proposes are very situation – proposition oriented, and meanwhile the role of the speaker is very reduced. Rather, the active application of the qualities of perception and judgment embodied by казаться, a perceptual and cognitive verb, can give better explanations for the choice of the epistemic modality marker кажется in various contexts.
