이민진의 『파친코』에 나타난 언어, 역사, 초국가적 문해력

초록

The purpose of this paper is to examine the linguistic strategy and postcolonial consciousness in Min Jin Lee's Pachinko by paying attention to her interest in the transnational literacy. A transnational text, Pachinko vividly represents the condition of coloniality in Yeongdo, Korea and (post)colonialty in various places in Japan by showing the pain and suffering of Zainichi living in Japan. In order to examine the postcolonial linguistic strategy, I attempt to use four concepts of postcolonial linguistic tactics by Bill Ashcroft: glossing, untranslated words, code-switching, and interlanguage. I also discuss the identity crises that the Zainichi experience in Japan by using the notion of hybridity. I argue that Min Jin Lee's use of bilingualism and postcolonial tactics in Pachinko is the way to enhance the transnational literacy not only for Koreans but also for the world readers including Japanese and American readers. I also argue that Pachinko is the transnational text in which the contemporary readers can learn the lesson of transnational issues such as the colonizers and the colonized, as well as the conflicting cultures and identity issues in order to overcome the historical wrongdoing among the nations.
