초록

This study examines Tevfik Başer’s film <40 Square Meters of Germany>(1986) from the perspectives of migration, space, and transnational narratives, aiming to address the limited scholarship on Başer’s works in Korean academia. Drawing on Hamid Naficy’s concept of ‘independent transnational cinema,’ it explores how the film transforms the depiction of ‘claustrophobic closed spaces’ into symbols of solidarity. Through long takes and close-ups, the film portrays the physical and psychological oppression of Turna, a Turkish immigrant woman confined to a small apartment in Germany, inviting viewers to reflect on her isolation and resistance. It further highlights the complexities of immigrant women’s identity struggles, advocating for solidarity, support systems, and protective environments akin to ‘warm greenhouses.’ By addressing migration, identity, and cultural conflict, the film offers valuable insights into the challenges of multicultural societies transitioning toward inclusivity.
