This study focuses on the fact that shell noun constructions are context-dependent linguistic expressions that perform various functions—such as referentiality, evaluativeness, and information structuring—depending on the speech situation and discourse context. The aim is to establish a typological classification system that can systematically account for their indexical characteristics. Previous studies have primarily classified shell noun constructions into “restrictive” and “anaphoric” types based on syntactic structure or surface-level combination patterns; however, such a dichotomy is insufficient to fully capture the complex functions and discursive roles observed in actual discourse. To address this limitation, this study conducts an empirical analysis of a newspaper corpus and classifies shell noun constructions into five types—restrictive, anaphoric, discursive, implicit, and composite—by comprehensively considering structural, functional, and contextual elements, including the combination of the shell noun and its quoted content, the explicitness of the quoted content, the information structure and cohesion within given discourse, and the speaker’s evaluative strategies. Each type is distinguished by whether the quoted content is explicitly realized, whether it relies on contextual cues, and whether it plays a leading role in discourse progression. In cases where multiple aspects overlap, the construction is categorized as composite. This typology provides an analytical framework for capturing the functional diversity of shell noun constructions and offers a theoretical foundation for explaining them from the perspective of indexicality.
