5․18민주화운동 왜곡 방지를 위한 언어철학적 접근* -명칭에 대한 갈등을 중심으로-

초록

The naming issue of the May 18 Democratization Movement plays a crucial role in defining the essence of historical events and shaping societal perceptions. This paper employs the philosophy of language, drawing from Kripke's theory of rigid designators, Frege's sense-reference distinction, Russell's theory of descriptions, and the cluster theory, to analyze the appropriateness of the movement's naming. The study argues that "Gwangju 5ㆍ18 People's Movement" better captures the event's core attributes, including its nature as a resistance movement, its pursuit of democracy, and its opposition to Chun Doo-hwan’s authoritarian regime. In contrast, the term "May 18 Democratization Movement," as a product of political compromise, inadequately reflects the resistance’s essence. By exploring the philosophical foundations of naming, this paper underscores the necessity of preventing historical distortion and ensuring accurate accountability. It further highlights the potential of philosophical analysis to address real-world conflicts by clarifying the essential attributes of historical events, thereby solidifying collective memory and social responsibility.
