· Research topics: Mental health social workers working in Basic Mental Health Welfare Centers (hereinafter referred to as "centers") were surveyed to explore their experiences of work that hinders their expertise development. · Research background: As centers' functions and roles expand, it is important to ensure that workers' expertise is developed to provide high-quality mental health services. Yet, there is still a lack of research on this topic. The research aimed to explore factors that hinder the development of expertise and ways to mitigate them. · Differences from prior research: Previous studies on center workers have mainly focused on burnout and turnover intentions. This study was designed to explore the factors that hinder the development of expertise among mental health social workers in centers. · Research method: Purposive and snowball sampling were used to conduct in-depth interviews with 14 mental health social workers with more than 5 years of experience in the center. The study used conventional qualitative research methods and applied inductive thematic analysis to draw conclusions. · Research results: Four themes and 16 categories were identified. The four themes were: 'Difficulty finding time to get used to it,' 'Not being able to afford to develop deeper competencies', 'Feeling limited in their role in collaborating with other organizations', and 'No milestones in the field.' · Contribution points and expected effects: This paper explores the factors that hinder the development of expertise and attempts to suggest ways to mitigate them.
