This study examines the family relations and daily life of Yi Sun-sin (李舜臣, 1545–1598) as recorded in his War diary[Nanjung Ilgi, 亂中日記] during the Imjin War(壬辰倭亂; 1592-1598). Focusing on his participation in household rituals and modes of communication with family members, the analysis reveals how Yi maintained personal and familial ties amidst the demands of wartime officialdom. This paper is structured into three sections. First, it explores Yi’s communication with family members. It identifies the scope and means of his correspondence, comparing them with those of other scholar-officials of the time who were similarly separated from their families due to war and official duties. Yi communicated with his sons, nephews, and household retainers, and through them, relayed messages to his mother and wife. He occasionally exchanged letters with them directly as well. Second, the paper investigates various familial rituals. Yi documented memorial rites for his great-grandfather, grandparents, father, in-laws, and older brothers. He also recorded mourning and wedding ceremonies, including the birth of a concubine’s child. Special attention is given to the scope of his diary entries and his modes of participation in these rites, highlighting his commitment to household rituals even amid military responsibilities. Third, the study considers Yi’s observations of seasonal festivals such as New Year’s Day, Samjinnal (上巳, the third day of the third lunar month), and Chuseok (秋夕, Harvest Festival). These entries offer insight into how Yi preserved a sense of domestic continuity and filial duty during the disruptions of war. Ultimately, the paper reflects on the broader social implications of Yi Sun-sin’s family life and rituals as a military official during the Imjin War, shedding light on the private dimensions of Yi Sun-sin’s life, which have often been overlooked in favor of his military record.
