Objectives: In this study, we aimed to examine the association among posterior occlusal support, tooth loss, and dietary intake patterns in adults in the United States. Methods: We analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) cycles of 2015-2016 and 2017–March 2020, including at least 40-year-old participants who com pleted both oral health examinations and two non-consecutive 24-hour dietary recalls. To assess the association between dental status and adherence to dietary recommendations, we applied complex survey-weighted methods, including Rao–Scott-adjusted chi-square tests as well as mul tiple linear and multinomial logistic regression. Results: Loss of posterior occlusal support was significantly associated with higher added sugar as well as lower dietary fiber and polyunsaturated fatty acid intakes. A higher natural and functional tooth number was positively associated with increased whole fruit, seafood, and plant protein con sumption as well as a reduced saturated fat and added sugar intake. In contrast, individuals with impaired posterior occlusal support consumed significantly fewer whole fruits and vegetables, greens and beans, seafood, and plant proteins, coupled with a higher added sugar intake. Partici pants with dental disease-induced severe (≥8) tooth loss were significantly more likely to fall into the lowest quintile of the Healthy Eating Index (indicating poor dietary quality) than those with mild (0-2) tooth loss. Conclusions: We demonstrated that compromised posterior occlusal support was associated with reduced dietary fiber, fruit, and vegetable as well as increased added sugar intakes.
