This study examines how individuals confronted with inner conflict may overcome suffering rooted in desire (abhijjhā) and discontent (domanassa). It argues that such afflictions can be resolved within the framework of concentration practice (samādhi), and identifies the first four steps of Early Buddhist mindfulness of breathing (ānāpānasati) as a preliminary practice optimized for this purpose. These initial steps are accessible to beginners regardless of circumstances, while also constituting a complete liberative framework described in the discourses as a “noble dwelling.” They further display a dual function, serving either as a basis for the four jhānas or as a foundation for insight practice through contemplation of impermanence, suffering, and non-self. The analysis suggests that concentration and insight operate in an integrated manner rather than as separate paths. By examining the usage and meanings of jhāna and its derivatives in the five Nikāyas and their commentaries, this study aims to clarify the Buddha’s approach to conflict resolution and contribute to reconstructing the original framework of Early Buddhist meditation, with particular emphasis on the practical role of the first four steps of mindfulness of breathing.
