This paper analyzes the absurdity of Chinese author Yan Lianke (閻連科)'s novel by comparing it with the works of Albert Camus and Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Specifically, after comparing Yan Lianker's Dream of Ding's Village (丁莊夢) with Camus’ Plague, Yan Lianker's Four Books (四書) and Camus’ Myth of Sisyphus were compared, and Lenin's Kiss (受活) and Marquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude were compared. Both Camus and Yan Lianke grapple with the question of how humans should live in an absurd world. They emphasize the importance of recognizing absurdity without losing human dignity or the spirit of resistance. Márquez, on the other hand, expresses the absurdities of Latin American history and politics through magical realism, while Yan employs what he calls “shenshizhuyi (神實主義)” to portray the distorted realities of Chinese society. Although One Hundred Years of Solitude and Lenin’s Kiss (受活) are set in vastly different historical and cultural contexts—Latin America and China respectively—they share a common theme in exposing the absurdity of reality and depicting the fate of both individuals and communities. In conclusion, Yan Lianke portrays the absurdity of Chinese society distorted by state power in an allegorical or tragic way in the novel, but in it reveals a strong desire for the restoration of human dignity.
